Seeking Asylum in Norway: Never Easy for Palestinians

Many Palestinians I meet here in Ramallah ask me where my interest in Palestine and the Palestinians comes from. Proudly, I answer that in Norway numerous organizations and political parties are concerned with their situation. Further we have a large Palestinian community of engaged, enlightened people who make sure that we don’t forget what is going on in their home country.
Only a few weeks ago, the Norwegian State Secretary, Espen Barth Eide, spoke to the UN General Assembly. There he announced that Norway is looking forward to welcoming Palestine as a new member state in the UN. He confirmed that the Norwegian position is that the Palestinian people are right in seeking recognition as a state. This is an important statement coming from Norway, a country with a special position when it comes to involvement in Palestine and its relations with Israel. However, I can’t help but wonder how this is in line with the way Palestinian asylum seekers are currently being treated in Norway.
Out of the largest groups of asylum seekers in Norway, Palestinians are the ones who are treated the most abrasively. Denying asylum to Palestinians in Norway has created a group without rights where they are and unable to return from where they came. Many are resourceful persons who had to flee from the West Bank, Gaza or neighboring countries because of problems with the Israeli occupation authorities and settlers or because of disputes with political groups inside Palestine. They have often chosen Norway as their destination because of the positive reputation Norway has in the Middle East and because of the Norwegian support in building Palestinian state institutions.
Earlier, all stateless Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank applying for asylum in Norway would be eligible to stay. It was the belief of the Norwegian authorities that this was required based on the general conditions in the area. This practice is in line with recommendations of the UNHCR. However, Palestinian asylum seekers in Norway are now asked to return to a life marked by occupation, violations of human rights and violence.
Further, even if they wanted to return it would most likely not be possible. The core of the issue is that the Norwegian authorities are not able to return the Palestinians to the occupied territories. They expect the Palestinians to go back voluntarily, but that is impossible when it comes to Gaza and often problematic even for the West Bank. There are many reasons why they are not able to return, including being banned by the Israelis; the risk of going to prison; the fact that what was once their home is now occupied by settlers; and disagreements with powerful political groups within Palestine. There is simply no way for these Palestinians to go back unless it is by illegal means and at their own risk. Hence they are forced to live in Norwegian asylum centers or to work illegally to get by for an indefinite period of time.
Many Palestinians I have met in Norway have been in this situation; unable to return, and not allowed to stay. Application processes for asylum and residence permits can take months and in some cases years. Meanwhile there is not much to do but wait. From what I have been told, that is the worst part, the waiting. And even if the applications are denied the Palestinians can’t return to Palestine, which means that they have to wait even longer.
The Palestinian asylum seekers who were denied permanent stay in Norway can wait for their case to be reconsidered, for something that will change the situation and make it possible for them to stay. As Palestinians everywhere else, however, they are also waiting for something to happen in Palestine - a waiting game that has been going on for more than 60 years.
Nonetheless, this is not going to change overnight, neither is the humanitarian situation in Gaza or the settler violence in the West Bank. When Espen Barth Eide spoke on behalf of Norway at the UN, he called for a change on the ground. As many times before, Norway is advising Palestine and Israel, making lists of demands they should fulfill and condemning the inhumane conditions under which the Palestinians live. Maybe it is about time they start looking at the conditions of Palestinian and other asylum seekers in Norway. Further, it makes no sense to condemn the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and call for changes on the one hand, and to deny Palestinians permanent stay in Norway on the other, thus attempting to send them back to what the Norwegian authorities themselves have deemed an unsustainable situation.

PressTV channel will be banned by OfCOM (UK)
Britain's Office of Communications, known as OfCom, has decided to take Press TV off air in the UK, citing administrative problems in Press TV's application as the reason. The British media regulator's decision is considered to be an abuse of the UK media law and the result of mounting pressure on the organization by certain members of the royal family and government.
As an alternative international media outlet, Press TV took pains to break the mainstream media's total silence on the violations of international law and human rights committed by the UK government at home and abroad.
Press TV interviews Chris Bambery, a political analyst in London, to discuss the motives behind this move.

Strajk głodowy palestyńskich więźniów w piekle izraelskiej niewoli ...
27 września 2011 roku, czyli przed prawie dwoma tygodniami, znajdujący się w izrealskich więzieniach członkowie Ludowego Frontu Wyzwolenia Palestyny (PFPL) rozpoczęli starjk głodowy, będący odpowiedzią na zaostrzenie środków karnych przez izraelskie służby więzienne (IPS). Poza całkowitym strajkiem głodowym więźniowie odmawiją wypełniania niektórych zasad IPS takich jak noszenie więziennych uniformów czy udział w apelach.
Strajkujący domagają się zakończenia izolacji Ahmada Sa'adata oraz innych palestyńskich więźniów politycznych, zakończenia polityki represji i upokorzeń wobec osób odwiedzających wieźniów, w tym odmowy wizyt rodzinom, zatrzymywania i przeszukiwania odwiedziających i utrudnianiu im przejazdu na punktach kontrolnych.
Głodujący więźniowie rządają także zaprzestania stosowania przemocy i upokarznia więźniów podczas transportu z jednego więzienia do innego.
Kampania na rzecz uwolnienia Ahmada Sa'adata pozostaje w solidarności z palestyńskimi więźniami uczestniczącymi w strajku głodowyw i wzywa ludzi z całego świata by złączyli swe głosy z głosami więźniów w wołaniu o sprawiedliwość.
Ahmad Sa'adat, uwięziony sekretarz generalny Ludowego Frontu Wyzwolenia Palestyny i palestyński przywódca narodowy, pozostaje uwięziony od czasu jego porwania 13 marca 2006 przez izraelskie siły okupacyjne.
Został on brutalnie uprowadzony przez siły izraelski z więzienia Autonomii Palestyńskiej gdzie był niesprawiedliwie przetrzymywany bez postawienia zarzutów przed cztery lata pod strażą amerykańską i brytyjską. W izolacji znajduje się już ponad dwa lata od czasu jago wezwania do oporu wobec izraelskiej agresji na Gazę w 2009 roku. W podobnej izolacji pozostają między innymi także ważni działacze Hamasu: Ibrahim Hamed, Abbas Assayed, Mahmud Issa, Abdullah Barghouti.
Oświadczenie strajkujących więźniów :
''My, towarzysze z Ludowego Frontu Wyzwolenia Palestyny znajdujący się w syjonistycznych więzieniach i centrach zatrzymań, deklarujemy niezłomnemu, walczącemu, dzielnemu narodowi palestyńskiemu oraz wszytkim wolnym ludziom na świecie, co następuje :
We wtorek 27 września 2011 roku rano rozpoczniemy bezterminowy strajk głodowy w odpowiedzi na oficjalną politykę syjonistycznego rządu oraz jego faszystowską administrację więzienną. Rządamy uszanowania naszych praw i godności w walce aż do zwycięstwa naszych wartości i postawionych celów.
Cele naszego strajku głodowego:
Zakończenie odosobnienia i izolacji naszego towarzysza, Sekretarza Generalnego Popularnego Frontu Wyzwolenia Palestyny, członka Rady Legislacyjnej Autonomii Palestyńskiej oraz Rady Centralnej OWP, Ahmada Sa'adata, Abu Ghassana.
Zakończenie polityki izolacji wszystkich więźniów.
Zakończenia polityki systematycznego upokarzania przez armię okupacyjną Palestyńczyków na punktach kontrolnych oraz przejściach granicznych, w szczególności wycelowaną w osoby jadące odwiedzić więźniów, zakończenie odmowy wizyt więźniów, w szczególności więźniów ze Strefy Gazy. Zaprzestanie upokarzania i znęcania się na więźniami podczas transeru.
Podstawowe zasady naszej rewolucji to odrzucenie wszystkich form niesprawiedliwości, dla nas to walka i konfrontacja z okupantem we wszystkich dziecinach i sferach w nasz własny sposób.
W związku z powyższym, wzywamy wszystkich Palestyńczyków i narody arabskie, siły polityczne i instytucje, organizacje praw człowieka i społeczeństwa obywatelskie, by podniosły swoje głosy wraz z nami, byśmy nie stali się łatwym łupem dla okupanta. Obiecujemy wszystkim naszym ludziom, oraz męczennikom Palestyny, że będziemy kontynuować naszą walkę do aż do zwycięstwa

Izreal traktuje więźniów palestyńskich w straszliwy sposób. Podczas zatrzymań są przsłuchiwani, torturowani i zastraszani.
Tzw ''security prisoners'' (więzieni ze względów bezpieczeństwa) są całkowicie izolowani przez nawet bardzo długi okres czasu.
''Administrative detainees'' (zatrzymani ze wzglądów bezpieczeństwa, wciąż bez procesu i wyroku) są przetrzymywani bez postawienia zarzutów na czas nieokreślony. Dzieci traktowane są jak dorośli.
Koszmarne warunki obejmują olbrzymie przeludnienie, słabą wentylację i kanalizację, brak możliwości zmiany odzieży, drewniane deski z cienkimi materacami jako łóżka, brudne koce, braki jakościowe w żywieniu, brak zgodności z wymogami żywieniowymi pod względem ilościowym i jakościowym, słaba opieka medyczna, utrudniony dostęp dla rodziny oraz inne formy nadużyć.
W czerwcu ubiegłego roku Netanyahu ogłosił plany dalszego zaostrzenia warunków, które już i tak łamały międzynarodowe prawo, teraz są jeszcze gorsze.
Od tego czasu około 2000 więźniów zostało całkowicie pozbawionych prawa do wizyt. Wizyty rodzin pozostałych więźniów zostały ograniczone z 45 minut dwa razy w tygodniu do 30 minut raz w miesiącu.
27 września palestyńscy więźniowie rozpoczęli strajk głodowy jako protest przeciwko zwiększeniu zaostrzeń karnych. 3 października, artykuł zatytułowany ''Palestyńscy więźniowie podjęli strajk głodowy jako protest przeciw pogarszającym się warunkom w izraelskich więzieniach'' w izraelskim Haaretz'u informuje :
Setki więźniów przyłączyło się do strajku w walce o lepsze warunki. Około 500 już odmówiła przyjmowania posiłków.
Tysiące Palestyńczyków zebrało się w celu wsparcia więźniów. Sami często pamiętają miesiące czy lata w piekle izraelskiego więzienia.
30 września Adalah/Al Mezan Centrum Praw człowieka/Lekarze dla Praw Człowieka w Izraelu wspólnie poinformowały że więźniowie są zdeterminowani do kontnuwania strajku do spełnienia postulatów lub utraty życia.
W ostatnich latach złe warunki jeszcze się pogorszyły, szczególnie pod władzą Netanyahu. Zbiorowe karanie palestyńskich więźniów nasiliło się, powstałe nowe przepisy i drakońskie regulacje.
Okrutne i nieludzkie traktowanie obejmuje:
- poddawanie długotrwałej izolacji przywódców politycznych i aktywistów na rzecz praw człowieka
- odmowa konsultacji prawnej podczas przesłuchania, tortury i złe traktowanie
- ograniczanie sądowej rewizji aresztowania i przesłuchań
- nielegalne więzienie Palestyńczykow w Izraelu
- ograniczanie wizyt
- utrudnianie rodzinom ze Strefy Gazy (również z Zachodniego Brzegu) odwiedzania uwięzionych członków rodziny
- nieuzasadnione kary pieniężne
- codzienne upokarzania i przeszukania
- poddawanie odwiedzających członków rodziny tej samej procedurze
- utrudnianie w korzystaniu z opieki medycznej
- zakaz kupowania jedzenia w kantynach
- odmowa korzystania z edukacji, opieki medycznej i prawidłowego żywienia
- blokowania kanałów telewizyjnych, odmowa dostępu do książek, gazet i materiałów edukacyjnych
- mające miejsce w celach, brutalne ataki izraelskich sił specjalnych „Nachschon“ i „Drur“ wobec więźniów
Strajkują więźniowie należący do różnych palestyńskich frakcji i organizacji politycznych we wszystkich izraelskich więzieniach i przyłączają się kolejni.
Strajkują między innymi uwięzieni członkowie Hamasu znajdujący się w Ramon, Eshe, Hafha i Ashkelon oraz inni więźniowie, także lider Fatahu - Nasser Owaiz. Również przynajmniej dziesięciu członków Palestyńkiego Islamskiego Dżihadu rozpoczęło głodówkę.
W strajku głodowym uczestniczą także kobiety między innymi: Linan Abu Ghoulmeh, Sumoud Kharajeh, Linan Abu Ghoulmeh, Duaa Jayyousi Wuroud Kassem oraz inne. Zostały one obecnie umieszczone w odosobnieniu w izolatkach.
Z powodu uczestnictwa w strajku i odmowie stosowania się do zasad IPS głodującym więźniom nie pozwala się na spotkania z rodzinami, ani prawnikami, odbierane są im rzeczy osobiste, a sami przenoszeni są do do izolatek trzymani w całkowitym odosobnieniu.
